Romans 1:1–17
The Gospel Announced
The Thread
Paul introduces his apostolic authority and announces the letter's theme — the gospel reveals God's righteousness and saves all who believe, from faith to faith.
Main Point
The gospel is God's powerful and unashamed means of saving everyone who believes — providing the righteousness God requires, in Christ, and producing a life of faith from start to finish.
Application
Not "Who am I?" but "Whose am I?" — identity, righteousness, and motivation all flow from belonging to Christ, not from self-constructed achievement.
Key Quote
"The greatest single hindrance to evangelism today is the secret poverty of our own spiritual experience." — John Stott
If You Missed It
1.In what areas of life are you tempted to find your identity outside of Christ?
2.What would it look like to live unashamed of the gospel this week?
3.Where are you still trying to establish your own righteousness rather than resting in Christ's?
Memory Verse
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith.'"Romans 1:16–17

God's Wrath on Unrighteousness
The Thread
Having announced the gospel, Paul builds his case for why everyone needs it — the Gentile world suppressed God's truth visible in creation and exchanged His glory for idols.
Main Point
God's wrath is already revealed against humanity's deliberate suppression of His truth. Judgment is present — God gives people over to the consequences of their own idolatry.
Application
What are you exchanging God's glory for? Every sin is at root a gospel rejection. The sinfulness around us should drive us to the cross, not to self-righteousness.
Key Quote
"The worst thing God can do to human beings is let them reach their idolatrous goals — his judgment is to give us over to the destructive power of idolatry." — John Piper
If You Missed It
1.What things in your life are you tempted to place above God — even good things?
2.Where are you suppressing truth about God that you already know?
3.How does understanding God's present wrath deepen your appreciation of the gospel?
Memory Verse
"For although they knew God, they did not honour him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened."Romans 1:21

Romans 2:1–16
God's Impartial Judgment
The Thread
Paul turns to the self-righteous moral person — judging others while doing the same things places you under the same impartial judgment. God's patience is a call to repentance, not comfort.
Main Point
God's judgment is completely impartial — no one escapes it. His patience and kindness are not permission to continue in sin; they are a call to repentance.
Application
Do you experience God's kindness as something meant to transform you, or merely to protect you? Excusing your own sin while condemning it in others proves you need the gospel too.
Key Quote
"God's kindness is coming to you and saying — I know you're struggling, come to me, I will give you rest."
If You Missed It
1.What sins are you more lenient with in yourself than in others?
2.How has God shown you kindness recently — and has it moved you toward repentance or complacency?
3.What would it look like to genuinely seek glory and honour from God alone this week?
Memory Verse
"Do you suppose, O man — you who judge those who practise such things and yet do them yourself — that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?"Romans 2:3–4

The Law and True Identity
The Thread
Paul addresses the religious person directly — those with the law and outward markers of faith — showing that knowledge and ceremony mean nothing without the Spirit's inner work.
Main Point
Outward religious identity — knowledge, practice, belonging — does not make a person right before God. True change is a work of the Spirit on the heart.
Application
Are you more concerned with appearing like a Christian than being transformed as one? Whose approval are you truly living for — people's or God's?
Key Quote
"So what if you have been baptised? So what if you are a church member? This only counts for anything if there has been a real change in your life." — Tim Keller
If You Missed It
1.What outward religious practices do you rely on as a measure of your standing with God?
2.Are there areas where your knowledge of Scripture hasn't yet reached your actual behaviour?
3.Are there hidden sins in your life that contradict what you publicly stand for?
Memory Verse
"But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God."Romans 2:29

Romans 3:1–20
All People Under Sin
The Thread
Paul closes the case — every escape route is blocked. Jew and Gentile alike stand guilty. The law can only expose sin, not fix it. The verdict is unanimous. And then the door opens...
Main Point
Every escape route from condemnation is closed. All stand guilty before God — sin has corrupted every part of who we are. The law exposes the problem; it cannot fix it.
Application
When you make decisions through the week, how often does the reality of God actually factor in? If a genuine fear of God were present every day, what would be the first thing that would have to change?
Key Quote
"Sin has so thoroughly corrupted every part of who we are — mind, will, affections, conscience, and body — that apart from God's grace we are unable to seek Him, please Him, or save ourselves."
If You Missed It
1.When you do something genuinely good, what is honestly driving it?
2.How often does the reality of God's presence factor into your decisions through the week?
3.If a genuine fear of God were present in your heart every day, what would be the first thing that would have to change?
Memory Verse
"For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin."Romans 3:20
